Your drone crashes and scratches a car’s fender. A gust of wind renders it incapable of manoeuvring for a short time, leading to a heavy landing – and the device is broken. Your drone flies into a tree and crashes to the ground.
We explain how to insure your drone and which insurance comes into play in which case.
What insurance do I need for my drone?
No matter how cautious they are, even the most skilful drone pilots have accidents. These can easily result in damage to someone else’s property or to the drone itself. This is where drone insurance helps.
Damage that you cause with your drone as the owner is covered by your liability insurance. And in the event of damage to the drone itself, your household contents or single-item insurance will step in.
Liability insurance – for damage caused by your drone
At Allianz, drones weighing less than 250 g are automatically included in our liability insurance. If your drone weighs 250 g or more, you must add it separately to your personal liability insurance policy. That is what our supplementary cover for “drones and model aircraft” is for. Your advisor will be happy to help.
Household contents or single-item insurance – for damage to your drone
Since it is part of your household contents, your drone is generally insured against fire and water damage and theft at home. What if it gets stolen outside the home? In this case, your household contents insurance will also cover you – provided that you have added the “simple theft outside the home” component to your policy.
If you would also like to insure your drone against all other risks, we recommend our comprehensive household contents cover for electrical equipment or our single-item insurance. That way, your beloved aircraft will also be insured if it lands in a neighbour’s pool or flies into a tree.
Drones can be expensive, so you should make sure that the sum insured in your household contents policy is correct. Otherwise, you might end up being underinsured, in which case any losses you incur will only be covered in part.
Is insurance mandatory for drones in Switzerland?
Yes. The Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) stipulates that personal liability insurance with a sum insured of at least CHF 1 million must be taken out for all drones weighing 250 g or more in Switzerland. This is intended to cover any damage that you cause to other property or people with your drone.
Insurance is not compulsory for drones weighing less than 250 g in Switzerland. Nevertheless, liability insurance is also recommended for lighter models to protect yourself against financial risks.
You must always carry proof of insurance with you during drone flights and be able to show it on request. Contact your adviser to obtain a certificate of insurance. Alternatively, log into our customer portal and save your policy as a PDF.
What do I have to consider when using a drone?
Never fly your drone over bird conservation areas, military installations or company premises. Stay well away from emergency services operations and at least 5 kilometres away from airfields. In addition, you must always maintain visual contact with your aircraft. For that reason, you must not fly your drone higher than 120 metres above the ground.
You are allowed to film and photograph outdoors with your drone, but do not violate the privacy of others – for example, by filming through windows or balcony doors. Regulations differ from canton to canton.
Since 2023, registration and training have also been mandatory for almost all drone pilots. In addition, all drones must be marked with a personal operator ID number.
