Whether we're working from home, at university or travelling: laptops are part of daily life. We save photos, personal data – often half of our lives – on them, so it is doubly annoying if they get stolen or damaged. Find out here which insurance covers which scenario – and how to correctly insure your laptop.
Which insurance do I need for my laptop?
Your laptop is part of your household contents – which means it is covered by your household contents insurance. Classic household contents insurance pays for loss or damage caused by the following, for example:
- Fire
- Natural hazard events such as hail and storms
- Mains water leaks
- Theft
However, some forms of loss and damage are excluded from traditional household contents insurance. Let's take a look at which type of insurance comes into play in which loss event.
Your laptop is stolen
If there is a break-in at your home and the burglars steal your MacBook, your household contents insurance will cover the loss.
If, by contrast, your laptop is stolen while you are out and about, you need the add-on "simple theft outside the home" for this to be insured. To guarantee that the full value of your laptop really is insured, make sure that your policy lists the correct sum insured.
Combined discount for all under-30s
With our combined household insurance, everyone under the age of 30 can save up to 30% when they combine their household contents insurance with a personal liability policy.
Your laptop gets broken
Have you accidentally spilled coffee on your laptop? Or dropped it while working on the train? Small mishaps can easily have big financial consequences. Classic household contents insurance does not cover damage that you cause to your laptop yourself.
In these situations, our household contents all risks insurance will help you out.
Among other things, it covers your laptop against:
- Damage to the display when it is accidentally dropped
- Damage caused by liquids
- Breakages during transport
What is especially important to note is that the insurance is also valid if you caused the damage yourself.
Household contents all risks or single-item insurance?
Our household contents all risks insurance covers your entire household contents against damage, destruction and loss.
If, by contrast, you only want to insure a single item against damage and theft, our single-item insurance might be an interesting solution for you.
You damage someone else's laptop
Perhaps you accidentally spilled tea on your friend's laptop at a café, or your child knocked your neighbour's laptop onto the floor while playing.
If you damage someone else's property, this is a case for your personal liability insurance.
What do I do if something happens to my laptop?
Whether your laptop has been stolen or damaged or it is broken – by acting quickly and taking the right steps, you can make sure that your claims are dealt with smoothly.
- Document the circumstances: Write down the time and location of the loss event and the details of what happened.
- Collect evidence: Keep your invoice or purchase receipt to hand. Take photos of any damage. If a repair is possible, ask for a cost estimate. In the event of theft, you must report the matter to the police.
- Report the damage: The sooner you do this the better – to speed up the claims handling process.
- Contact your insurer: Online, by phone or via your customer portal: with Allianz, you can report your claim easily and conveniently online or by telephone.
How much does laptop insurance cost?
How much laptop insurance costs depends on the type of insurance you opt for.
With our single-item insurance, the amount of the premium is determined by the value of the laptop, among other things.
With household contents all risks insurance, by contrast, the value of your entire household contents is the deciding factor.

Insure your laptop with Allianz

Depending on the purchase price, separate laptop insurance may well be worthwhile. If you buy a MacBook for CHF 1,500 and then spill liquid on it, your normal household contents insurance will not cover the costs.
If you have conventional household contents insurance, you should make sure that "simple theft outside the home" cover is included. It is also essential that the sum insured is high enough. Then you can be sure that you have sufficient cover if your laptop is stolen while you are on holiday or using public transport.
By contrast, with our valuables insurance and our household contents all risks cover, it makes no difference whether the damage or loss happens at home or while you are out and about.
Conventional household contents insurance will not cover the damage. With household contents all risks or valuables insurance, by contrast, your laptop will also be insured against damage that you or other people in your household cause.
