AT A GLANCE
  • In most cases, regular household contents insurance does not provide sufficient cover for high-value musical instruments.
  • With single-item insurance, you can cover your instruments against damage and theft and – optionally – against loss.
  • You can also use the same policy to insure accessories such as bows, amplifiers and mixing consoles.
  • If you rent your instrument, your personal liability insurance will pay for any damage.

Never leave the house without your steel-stringed guitar? Is your concert grand your pride and joy? Or perhaps playing the theremin is your favourite way to relax? With our instrument insurance, you can be sure that your instrument is properly insured.

In principle, your musical instruments belong to your household contents – and are therefore covered by your household contents insurance. A word of caution, however: the cover limits offered by classic household contents insurance are often insufficient for high-value instruments.

Since traditional household contents insurance only covers theft and damage caused by fire, water and natural hazard events, it will not pay the costs if your instrument is damaged due to being dropped or gets broken during transportation, for example.

For that reason, we recommend our single-item insurance for musical instruments.

It insures items at replacement value, thus ensuring that your beloved cello, saxophone or piano is optimally protected. In addition, your instruments are covered not only at home but also on the go – be it when you are travelling, in the rehearsal room or during performances.

Even accidental damage and total loss can be insured.

GOOD TO KNOW

Do you have an expensive MacBook for your DJ set? Or a professional camera for shooting music videos? With our single-item insurance, you can also cover electronic equipment that you use for private purposes.

Theft, damage or loss: the following table shows the situations in which our single-item insurance covers loss or damage to your instrument – and those in which it does not.

Covered

  • Theft
  • Damage caused by external influences
  • Loss and disappearance (optional)

Not covered

  • Destruction due to cleaning by third parties
  • Material fatigue and wear and tear
  • Effects of light exposure and climatic influences
  • Damage caused by rodents and other pests
  • Forced sale under debt enforcement law

The level of your insurance premium depends, among other things, on the following factors:

  • The value of your instrument
  • The number of instruments being insured
  • Your chosen coverage, e.g. loss protection

Want to know exactly what the premium will be for your instrument? Our advisors will be happy to help.

Whether you teach at a music school, are the concertmaster in a professional orchestra or regularly work as a DJ – if you have made music your profession, you will need comprehensive insurance cover.

Perhaps the neck of your electric guitar snapped during a stage dive. Or your crescendo was so powerful that your coffee spilled all over your grand piano. Or maybe you had such a brilliant idea that you left your Stylophone on the train.

It is essential to act quickly and correctly in the event of damage or loss. By doing so, you can ensure that your claim will be processed without any issues.

  • Take immediate action: Do everything you can to minimise the loss. If you spilled liquid on your instrument, dry it. If your instrument has been lost, notify the lost property office right away.
  • Make a record of the situation: Note down when and where the loss or damage occurred and document what happened in as much detail as possible.
  • Collect evidence: Make sure that you have the purchase receipts and invoices for your instrument to hand. Take photos of any damage that has occurred. In the event of theft, you must report the matter to the police.
  • Report the damage: Notify your insurance company as soon as possible. The faster you report the incident, the sooner the claims handling and settlement process can begin.
  • Contact your insurer: Depending on the provider, you can report the claim online, over the phone or via a customer account. Insured with Allianz? Then you can report the claim easily and conveniently online (german, french or italian) or by calling 0800 22 33 44 (in Switzerland) or +41 43 311 99 11 (from abroad).

During your next rehearsal, on your next concert tour, at home – wherever it is, your instrument is reliably protected with our single-item insurance. The cover is individually tailored to your instrument and is valid worldwide.

And if you have any questions, our advisors are always happy to help.

From accordions to zithers, our single-item insurance can be taken out for all types of musical instruments.

These include:

  • String instruments such as violins, violas, cellos and double basses
  • Wind and brass instruments such as clarinets, flutes, saxophones and trumpets
  • Plucked instruments such as guitars, bass guitars and harps
  • Keyboard instruments such as upright pianos, grand pianos, keyboards and synthesizers
  • Percussion instruments such as drums, marimbas and djembes
  • Accessories such as bows, cases, amplifiers, effects units and mixing consoles

Particularly valuable or historical instruments can also be insured. Here, too, a valuation report or proof of purchase is required to determine the correct sum insured.

With our single-item insurance, your instruments are covered worldwide against theft and damage and – optionally – against loss. It is important that they are transported correctly and stowed safely.

The insurance does not cover loss and damage that occurs while the instruments are being transported by a third party.

If a borrowed instrument is broken or lost, this will normally be covered by your personal liability insurance. It pays the costs of damage to borrowed or hired items.

But beware: personal liability insurance is not valid for hire-purchase agreements.
