Our household contents insurance
Everything under control.

Home is where you feel at ease. Our household contents insurance makes sure it stays that way. With just one policy, you can insure your entire household contents – and if you wish, your valuables and electrical and sports equipment as well.

Household contents insurance covers damage to your household contents up to the agreed sum insured – for example as a result of water damage, theft, glass breakages, earthquakes or fires in your home. For even more cover, you can supplement your household contents policy with our additional options.

THIS IS INCLUDED

Your washing machine has leaked. A pipe has burst. Rainwater is dripping from the ceiling. People often underestimate how much damage water can do to their home. Although we do not actually dry your possessions ourselves, our household contents insurance enables you to buy dry replacements.

The shock of suffering a theft, burglary or robbery is bad enough. Our household contents cover ensures that you don't suffer a financial shock, too. And with the "theft outside the home" add-on, we will also pay for the loss if your bike is stolen at the train station, for example.

Good to know:

We also pay for household contents that are damaged or lost when you move house.

Whether it's your customised wall mirror, your trophy display cabinet or your brand-new ceramic hotplate, glass breakages can happen in the blink of an eye. With that in mind, it's great that you can also have glass, ceramic, natural stone or artificial stone furniture covered by our household contents insurance on request. Incidentally, sinks and toilets can be included, too.

Sometimes, life can get a little too exciting for comfort. For instance if lightning strikes and your garden furniture goes up in flames, or your cellar floods during heavy rainfall and your expensive ski equipment goes for a swim. When a fire or flooding sweeps away everything in its wake. Although we cannot bring your destroyed household contents back, our household contents insurance will at least cover the financial consequences – quickly and with no red tape.

Good to know:

You will even be insured if an aircraft part or a drone accidentally crashes into your roof.

The ground and the walls begin to shake – pictures slide off the wall, your china crockery tumbles out of the cabinet and your TV lands on the floor. Fortunately, strong earthquakes are rare in Switzerland. When they do occur, however, they can do a lot of damage to your household contents.

That is why earthquake damage is covered by our household contents insurance. Volcanic eruptions and tsunamis triggered by earthquakes are also insured – and not just at your home, but also when you are travelling.

Need help quickly, as soon as possible or this very second? Our experts will assist you around the clock. For example with the blocking service for your registered identity documents, cards and subscriptions.

You can also supplement our assistance services with our cover for online and store purchases and our home protection cover.

Like to spend time at your holiday home? Fortunately our household contents insurance also covers your possessions that you have temporarily taken with you from home – worldwide and for up to two years.

Good to know:

For furniture and other objects that are permanently located in your holiday apartment, you will generally need a separate household contents policy.

You can supplement your household contents insurance with the following additional options, for example:

Who still goes out of the house without their smartphone today? Is half of your life saved on your laptop? Then comprehensive cover for electrical appliances is the perfect addition to your household contents policy. It covers almost all forms of damage to your electronic devices – they are even insured against being dropped.

Incidentally, this insurance is also available for your sports equipment. Whether it's your bike, your skis or your surf board – you are on the safe side with our comprehensive cover for sports equipment.

Elektro- und Sportgeräte-Kasko

The baggage carousel stops and your suitcase is nowhere to be seen. Or it does arrive, but has had an even more exciting journey than you. Regardless of what happens to your luggage, our household contents insurance will step in if you have this add-on and cover the costs you incur for urgent purchases, such as a new toothbrush or some fresh underwear.

Dropped your camera? It can happen to anyone. Our luggage insurance covers everything you take on holiday with you.

Hausrat All Risk

Are you someone who likes to keep it simple? For household contents sums insured of CHF 50,000 or higher, we recommend that you take out our household contents all risks insurance. This replaces your classic household contents policy, providing comprehensive cover for all of your possessions. No ifs and buts – and no need for additional options. For instance, if you stumble over your surround sound system while cleaning, or a cigarette burn does permanent damage to your sofa.

What is more, the all risks cover applies not just at home but also when you are out and about. In case you lose something – your house keys, for example.

You already have everything you need, and yet new items keep on appearing: a new e-bike, the latest tablet, that long-coveted electric guitar. Your household contents grow steadily over time. And as they grow, so does their value. Especially if you move in with your partner.

Experience shows that you should check your household contents insurance every two years to make sure that the sum insured is still correct.

FAQ

Put simply, your household contents insurance covers your fixtures, fittings and everyday items at replacement value. In other words, at the price you would pay today to buy an equivalent item. If repair is possible, we pay the repair costs up to a maximum of the replacement value.

Whether household contents insurance is mandatory for you depends on the canton you live in. What many do not know is that fire and natural hazard insurance is compulsory for people living in the cantons of Nidwalden, Vaud, Fribourg or Jura.

In Nidwalden and Vaud, fire and natural hazard damage must be insured with the cantonal fire insurance scheme. However, other important but voluntary household contents coverage types can only be taken out with a private insurer like Allianz. These include water and theft insurance, for example.

Fire and natural hazard insurance is also mandatory in the cantons of Fribourg and Jura, but here you have a free choice of insurer – and can insure fire and natural hazard damage together with the other cover under the same household contents policy.

In all other cantons, household contents insurance is voluntary.

Whether you need earthquake insurance for your household contents depends on several factors, including where you live, the risk of earthquakes in your region and your personal security needs. Here are some thoughts that may help you with the decision.

  • Earthquake risk: If you live in an area that is susceptible to earthquakes, it can be worth considering earthquake insurance. There are a number of regions with an elevated earthquake risk in Switzerland, particularly in the vicinity of geological faults.
  • Extent of coverage: Generally, standard household contents insurance does not cover earthquake damage. Special earthquake insurance can cover the costs of damage that an earthquake causes to your personal property, e.g. furniture, electronic equipment or other objects of value.
  • Financial security: Earthquake insurance can give you financial security by paying the costs for repairing or replacing damaged items. Think about whether you would able to cover these expenses yourself in the event of an earthquake.
  • Costs and deductibles: Find out about the costs of earthquake insurance and how high the deductible will be in the event of a claim.
  • Advice: Talk to your insurance advisor so that you can make an informed decision. They can help you to assess the risks and find the right cover to meet your needs.

In general, household contents insurance only covers jewellery up to a certain value. If you own very expensive rings or a lot of jewellery, it may make sense to take out valuables insurance or an all risks policy. In addition to the risks covered by the household contents insurance, these will also pay out if you lose your wedding ring.

You do not have to terminate your contract when you move house. Simply inform us of your new address and we will update your contract accordingly. In this situation, it is important to check your household contents insurance. Are the sum insured and the insured benefits still correct in your new living situation? Your advisor will be happy to help you with any changes to your cover. Incidentally, your household contents are insured at both locations during the move itself.

Musical instruments are generally covered by your household contents insurance – regardless of whether they belong to you or are hired. The usual risks such as fire, water damage and theft are insured as standard. Would you also like to insure other types of damage to your instrument, e.g. as a result of it being accidentally dropped? If so, then it's worth taking out valuables insurance.

Your belongings are insured via a component of the household contents insurance known as off-premises cover for up to two years. However, this only applies if you mostly live with your parents. If you spend the majority of your time living in the other city, you need a separate household contents policy.

Moving house generally isn't a valid reason for termination. However, in this situation you will normally be able to terminate one of the two policies and take out household contents insurance for all members of the household. Your advisor will be happy to help you with the formalities.
