You turn away to talk to the waiter in a café and before you know it your phone is gone. You accidentally drop your new smartphone on a stone floor – and now you have a spider web display. You take a refreshing swim in the lake – unfortunately your phone comes with you.
Smartphones are expensive and constantly in use. Things can happen to them quickly. Is it worth taking out additional cover with mobile phone insurance or is your household contents policy already sufficient? We give you the clarity you need in order to decide.
Which types of loss/damage to my mobile phone does my household contents insurance cover?
Have you taken out household contents insurance? This covers your mobile phone against fire/natural hazard and water damage in your home. Your household contents insurance will also pay out if your smartphone is stolen at your home.
And with additional cover for theft outside the home, your phone is even insured against pickpockets when you are out and about.
For the purpose of the household contents insurance, water damage includes damage to your possessions caused by leaking mains water from a burst pipe, for example.
If you drop your smartphone into a lake or spill a drink on it, this is not water damage for the purposes of household contents insurance – this would be a case for your comprehensive electrical appliance or single-item insurance.
Comprehensive electrical appliance cover: additional protection for your mobile phone
Would you also like to insure your mobile phone against damage caused by you or another member of your household? For example, if you drop your smartphone on the ground or your child spills coffee on it.
If you already have household contents insurance with us, you can easily extend it with comprehensive electrical appliance cover. This also covers damage for which you are at fault, e.g. a smashed screen from that time when your phone slipped out of your hands.
Comprehensive electrical appliance insurance also covers all other electrical devices in your home – such as your children’s smartphones, TVs, expensivecameras and laptops. Our electrical appliance insurance therefore gives you much more comprehensive cover than mobile phone insurance from the seller.
Valuables and single-item insurance: the simple alternative
Don’t want household contents insurance or already have a policy with another insurance company? In this case, you can easily get comprehensive cover for your smartphone via our valuables and single-item insurance.
This ensures that your smartphone is optimally insured against theft and damage for which you are at fault.
You can insure individual items such as smartphones with us from a replacement value of CHF 500.
How much does mobile phone insurance cost?
The cost of mobile phone insurance usually depends on the value of the device, the insured benefits and the agreed deductible.
With our comprehensive cover for electrical appliances, for example, you can insure all your electrical appliances up to CHF 2,000 – for a premium starting from CHF 85 per year.
Looking for mobile phone insurance for a single device? With our valuables and single-item insurance, you can insure a smartphone with a replacement value of CHF 1,200 or more from just CHF 69, for example.
Both policies have a deductible of at least CHF 200.
The bottom line: the right mobile phone insurance for your needs
Your mobile phone is insured against fire, natural hazard and water damage and theft as part of your household contents insurance. Pay attention to the excess and make sure that you have also included cover for theft outside the home.
If you would like to insure damage to your mobile phone for which you are at fault, the best way to do so is to take out additional cover for electrical appliances in your household contents insurance.
No household contents insurance? No problem. With valuables and single-item insurance, you can also insure your favourite item individually against damage.
Frequently asked questions and answers
- Speed is of the essence. Take your phone out of the water as soon as possible and turn it off immediately.
- Next, remove the SIM card and, if possible, other individual parts such as the battery. Carefully dab the mobile phone and the parts dry with kitchen roll or a lint-free cloth (e.g. microfibre). Under no circumstances should you attempt to rub the phone dry as this can damage the electronics.
- Place the phone in a box containing silica gel, rice or cat litter, close the box and store it in a warm and dry place.
- Remove the mobile phone from the box after 24 hours at the earliest and check whether it is working.
If you have taken out comprehensive electrical appliance or valuables and single-item insurance, any loss or damage can be reported to the insurer. Of course you can also report the claim if you have the comprehensive cover provided by an all risks policy.
