You emerge from your mid-morning hot chocolate to discover that your snowboard is gone. Your skis break during a crash – or perhaps even your leg. Winter is the peak season for insurance claims. But if you are well informed, you will at least get through it without any financial losses.
Why is insurance cover important for your winter holiday?
The winter holidays are just around the corner and you have retrieved your skis and snowboards from the cellar. Before you head for the pistes, however, it is important to check your insurance. Personal accident and liability cover are essential.
Travel insurance is always recommended during your holidays and ski or snowboard insurance is well worth having, too. One way to insure your skis or snowboard is to integrate comprehensive sports equipment cover into your household contents insurance, as this covers skis, boards, helmets and other protective equipment.
What kind of insurance do skiers and snowboarders need?
Luminescent peaks, glistening fresh snow, brilliant sunshine... Skiing and snowboarding holidays are simply the best. So that you can enjoy them to the full, however, it is important to have optimal insurance cover.
With the right insurance, you can protect yourself against the financial consequences of a skiing accident and save both trouble and valuable time.
Cover for accidents
If you suffer an accident while skiing, the one thing you shouldn’t have to worry about is your insurance. To ensure that both you and your family are properly covered, accident insurance is mandatory in Switzerland. Depending on the nature and location of the accident, either your accident insurance or your travel insurance will step in.
And if someone else is involved, liability insurance will protect you against the financial consequences.
Accident insurance
One fall is all it takes – and your cruciate ligament ruptures. Accidents are common in the snow. Fortunately, most employees are insured against non-occupational accidents via their employer. But beware: the self-employed, the unemployed, employed people with very low degrees of employment, home makers, children and adolescents often have little cover for accidents. With this in mind, it is important to make sure that you and your family are adequately insured.
One way to do so is with private accident insurance. With this type of policy, you can agree private cover in hospital, for example. Your accident insurance will also step in if you suffer a loss of earnings due to an accident – enabling you to recover in peace. Find out more in our guide to accident insurance and the UVG obligation.
And for the event of skiing accidents abroad, it is advisable to take out travel insurance. This will cover the costs of your rescue and transport to hospital – and, if necessary, your journey home too.
Personal liability insurance
Unaccustomed to the speed of your brand-new skis, you collide with a snowboarder sitting at the edge of the piste. Injury and damage that you cause to other people can quickly become expensive. Liability insurance will cover the costs of this and protect you against claims by third parties. To be completely on the safe side, additional gross negligence cover is recommended. With this, you are also insured if you accidentally cause damage or injury to someone through gross negligence.
Valid personal liability insurance is mandatory on some foreign ski slopes. In Italy, for example, you should always carry a copy or a photo of your policy with you. This also applies if you are in Zermatt and ski over to the Italian side for a few hours. You can find your policies in the customer portal.
Cover for your equipment
You return from the sunny restaurant terrace to discover that your snowboard isn’t where it should be. Your ski jump was epic – the landing a little less so. With appropriate household contents insurance, incidents like these aren’t such a tragedy. The right add-on will cover your skis or snowboard against theft and damage.
Household contents insurance
Want to insure your winter sports equipment against theft? All you have to do is add “simple theft outside the home” to your household contents insurance. That way, the loss will still be annoying, but at least you will not suffer the financial consequences.
There are several ways to insure yourself against damage to your skis – for example by adding comprehensive sports equipment cover to your household contents policy. If you do this, both your sports gear itself and your protective equipment will be insured against damage. It does not matter who causes the damage – you or someone else.
Another great way to insure your sports equipment is via our household contents all risks product. This covers your entire household contents not only against damage but also against loss and disappearance.
Want comprehensive insurance but only for a single valuable item? If so, then our single-item insurance/valuables insurance is perfect for you. It also provides cover against theft and damage – for instance if your expensive wristwatch breaks during a skiing accident.
Personal liability insurance
To find out whether the latest skis are as good as they look, you decide to test them. Renting is easy – and with liability insurance, it’s no problem if you test the skis that little bit too hard. Our liability insurance covers damage to or theft of rented equipment – ensuring that you don’t end up having to foot the bill yourself.
When luck is not on your side
Sometimes the best preparation in the world is not enough – for example, if you catch the flu unexpectedly or the Airbnb you booked turns out to be fake. In cases like this, our travel insurance or our legal protection insurance will be there to help.
Travel insurance
The hotel is booked, your ski passes are ready – and you are ill in bed. As a result, you are unable to set off on your well-deserved winter holiday. In situations like this, travel insurance provides at least a modicum of comfort. It covers the cancellation costs if you fall ill before the start of your holiday and the costs of rescue and transport to the nearest hospital if you suffer an accident abroad.
If necessary, it will even pay for your journey home.
Legal protection insurance
The hotel isn’t as promised. After a collision on the slopes, your accident insurer claims that your symptoms are unrelated to the accident. In situations like these, legal protection insurance gives you peace of mind. It steps in on your behalf in the event of unjustified reductions in benefits, for example.
You are also entitled to legal information over the phone and assistance from the experienced legal professionals at CAP Legal Protection (German, French or Italian). After all, nobody should have to tolerate injustice.
Well insured on the slopes – what does this mean specifically?
To ensure that your skiing holiday is memorable only in a positive sense, you should check whether you have the key insurance policies before you set off. These are compulsory accident insurance, personal liability insurance and household contents insurance with the most important add-ons. If you are going abroad, it is also advisable to take out travel insurance. And if you want to be extra safe, you should have legal protection and valuables insurance, too.
