AT A GLANCE
  • Travel cancellation insurance reimburses the cancellation or additional costs you incur when you are unable to set off on a trip, or if you can only do so later than planned.
  • Our travel cancellation insurance also covers costs incurred due to epidemic or pandemic illnesses.

Bought a ticket, packed your suitcase, then caught a tummy bug? An illness or an accident can quickly mess up your travel plans, which is not only annoying but also expensive. With travel cancellation insurance, you are in luck despite your travel-related misfortune. It is usually included in your travel insurance.

Travel cancellation insurance is also known as cancellation costs insurance. As the name suggests, travel cancellation insurance reimburses the cancellation or additional costs that you incur if you are unable to travel or are delayed.

Your break your ankle during an amateur football tournament. Your car gives up the ghost on the way to the airport. There are many reasons for cancelling or delaying a trip, and they are always entirely specific to you. The most common ones are accident, illness and death. However, if you are unable to travel due to an unexpected change of job or a natural disaster, our travel cancellation insurance will also pay the costs.

No one can predict the future. However, our travel cancellation insurance will take away many of your worries:

A close family member ends up in the hospital, or you catch a severe case of flu. If you are unable to embark on a journey, the cancellation costs insurance will step in. It covers cancellation costs for flights, hotels, rental cars, concert tickets, courses and seminars, for example.

Your ankle has been fitted with a cast. Your car has been repaired. Finally you are ready to go. A little late, but anyhow. Our travel cancellation insurance will cover the additional costs incurred as a result of the delay. And not only for travel but also for seminars and training courses.

The insurance does not cover incidents in countries or regions for which the Swiss authorities or the World Health Organization (WHO) already advised against travel at the time of booking, for example.

It also will not pay out if you are unable to travel due to a medical condition that you already had when you took out the policy. The same applies if you have caused a medical problem yourself, for example by abusing medications.

Travel cancellation insurance is part of travel insurance. Travel insurance generally includes:

  • Travel cancellation insurance in case you cannot travel as planned.
  • Personal assistance that protects you personally on your travels. In the event of illness or accident during your trip, this will cover the costs of rescue and transportation to the nearest hospital and organise and pay for your journey home.
  • There is also an option to add luggage insurance to your travel insurance.

The insurance must be taken out before an insured event occurs – before you become ill or suffer an accident that makes it impossible to travel, for example.

GOOD TO KNOW

Our travel insurance does not just cover a single trip; it protects you all year round – including for short trips, concerts and other events. This also makes sense from a financial perspective, as it means that you do not have to take out insurance in individual cases. Please note that the insurance is only valid if your stay lasts for more than 24 hours or if you travel at least 30 kilometres from your place of residence.
