What is luggage insurance?
What is luggage insurance? Luggage insurance covers you against the financial consequences of delayed arrival, damage to, and loss or theft of your luggage, for example. If the worst comes to the worst, we will also make sure that you can obtain replacement clothes and the most important everyday items. We also reimburse costs you incur for replacing your identity documents.
Luggage insurance is not a separate policy – it is an add-on, either to your travel insurance or to your household contents insurance.

Luggage insurance must be valid before you set off on your journey. A stay away from your place of residence lasting at least one day counts as a journey, for example.
Which luggage items can be insured?
Our luggage insurance covers the following items:
- Your luggage (suitcase, bag, rucksack) including your own items for your personal travel needs
- Souvenirs that you buy on the trip
- Musical instruments that you take on the journey for personal use Sports equipment such as golf and ski bags for personal use are insured during transport, but not during use
Luggage insurance does not cover damage to the following items, among others:
- Jewellery
- Trade goods (goods acquired for resale)
- Professional tools and equipment

Lost, stolen or damaged luggage: here’s what to do
As a general rule, you should do the same as with all claims: keep calm and document what has happened as well as you can. The following section explains in detail how to proceed after a claim:
Lost or damaged baggage
- If your luggage arrives late or does not turn up at all, you will need confirmation of this from the travel or transport company. For air travel, you can get this from the lost-and-found desk at the airport or from the airline. You can send us the reference number for the incident, which you will be given at the desk, when you report the claim.
- If you need to buy things like toiletries and clothes, keep the receipts or take photos of them.
- If your suitcase does not show up at all, you can send us a list of its contents.
- The best way to document damage to luggage is by taking photos.
- To reimburse the costs you incur as quickly as possible, we need to be notified of the claim. You can do this online, by phone or by e-mail.
Stolen luggage
If your luggage has been stolen, you must file a report with the police – ideally straight away. If this is not possible, you can do so after your return. Monetary assets are covered in the event of burglary and robbery up to the sum insured that is specified in the policy.
No matter how well you plan, something can always go wrong. If you do not start your journey at all or are delayed, supplementary travel cancellation insurance will help.
