Our
daily sickness benefits insurance.

As an employer, you are legally obliged to continue paying your employees’ salary if they fall ill (Art. 324a CO). Without the right insurance, this can be a significant financial burden. Play it safe with our daily sickness benefits insurance for employers.

THIS IS INCLUDED

It’s bad enough when an employee is absent due to illness. Our daily sickness benefits insurance, also known as loss of earnings insurance, ensures that the staff shortage is not compounded by financial stress as well. After the agreed waiting period, you will receive the insured daily sickness benefits so that you can continue to pay your employee’s salary – usually for up to 730 days.

If your sick employee is entitled to disability insurance benefits (pillar 1), these are usually paid out after one year and coordinated with the benefits under the daily sickness benefits insurance up to the agreed amount. Under certain conditions, an additional BVG (pillar 2) disability pension can be deferred during the period in which daily sickness benefits are being paid.

As the employer, you determine the amount of the daily sickness benefits to be paid out. Options include 80%, 90% or 100% of the employee’s most recent salary.

Set the waiting period for the first payment of daily sickness benefits yourself – for example 14, 30 or 60 days. Choosing a longer waiting period reduces the premium.

If an employee dies as a result of an illness, you are obliged in your capacity as employer to continue paying his or her salary to the surviving dependants for a certain period of time. You can take out supplementary insurance for this, too.

If you would like to extend the amount and/or duration of the statutory maternity allowance for your employees under the Loss of Earnings Compensation Act (EOG), you can easily insure these benefits too.

As a self-employed person, do you also want to be covered in the event of incapacity due to accidents? You can add daily accident benefits to your daily sickness benefits as part of your fixed-sum insurance.

Own a business and do not pay yourself a regular salary? Perhaps your company has employees with especially high earnings. For cases like these, you can insure a fixed (payroll) total which will be paid irrespective of the actual salary.

No. Daily sickness benefits insurance is voluntary. However, it is recommended for companies – especially those with employees – in order to counter the risk posed by the statutory obligation to continue salary payments. In some sectors (e.g. the construction industry), daily sickness benefits insurance is mandatory under the collective labour agreement.

The employer pays the premiums for daily sickness benefits insurance. In most cases, however, up to 50% of the premium for daily benefits insurance is borne by employees via deduction from their gross salary (as with AHV contributions).

The employer is obliged to notify both new and departing employees of what is in the insurance contract. If you take out daily sickness benefits insurance, we will provide you with the relevant documents for this. For departing employees, the most important thing is to inform them about the right to maintain their insurance cover as an individual policy (if they are entitled to this). As a general rule, entry and departure notifications for individual employees are not required.

If an employee falls ill and is therefore unable to work, he or she must report this to the employer immediately and submit a medical certificate of incapacity for work. The employer, in turn, must report this to the insurance company and forward the certificate of incapacity for work by the relevant deadlines. Further obligations in connection with illness are set out in the applicable terms and conditions of your daily benefits insurance.

As long as the insured person is in employment, the daily sickness benefits are generally paid to the employer. The employer pays its employees their salaries in accordance with the provisions of the employment contract.

Daily sickness benefits are paid out for a maximum of 730 days, minus the agreed waiting period. If your company is subject to a collective labour agreement, the duration of benefits may be adjusted.

If the employee falls ill during the term of the employment relationship, daily sickness benefits will continue to be paid after he or she has left the company in certain cases – if required until the end of the maximum benefit period.

Yes. Under certain conditions, employees who have left the company have the option of maintaining their cover under the previous daily benefits insurance as an individual policy. In the event of unemployment, the person must register with the responsible regional employment centre (RAV) as soon as possible. You can find further details in the information sheet, which must be made available to departing employees when they leave the insured company. These documents contain the deadline for registration and other important information.

Anyone who employs a cleaner in their household must insure them against occupational accidents. Accident insurance can be taken out with a private insurer or when registering with the compensation fund. The premiums depend on the cleaner’s workload, but are at least CHF 100 per year. Additional daily sickness benefits insurance also makes sense in this case.

If a domestic worker cannot come to work due to illness, they are entitled to continued salary payment for a certain period of time, just like other employees. The duration of their entitlement depends on how long they have been working for the employer and which canton they are in. This is because employment relationships of domestic workers are subject to cantonal regulations, known as “standard employment contracts”. These define how long the employer must continue to pay the employee’s salary in the event of illness. The rules vary considerably.
